We engrave on the wooden piece under the cover or on the box as well as on the compass itself. The box engraving is decorated with abalone or mother of pearl shell inlay.

I just received my order of personalized compass with wood box and leather pouch. The wood box with engraved lid is far nicer than the photos in the listing could display; with a very nice glossy finish over the entire box. I had the compass top/lid engraved on both the top and inside the lid, along with engraving on the bottom. The entire set (compass, box and pouch) makes for a stunning gift set. Am so pleased with this purchase!
